Wine with geographical indication „Hills of Transylvania” is the product obtained from grapes harvested from vineyards located in the wine region of the Transylvanian Plateau, a region characterized by similar climatic conditions and reliefs. The actual alcoholic strength of wines obtained in this region must be at least 9.5% vol.
Kazal Zsigmond shows that in 1051 king Andrew of Hungary sent to Emperor Henry III „a very large quantity of wine”, which could only come from the native vineyards in the hills of Transylvania. The wines originating in this region, obtained in the famous and archaic fields of Ighiu, Şard, Ţelna, Cricău, Jidvei, Aiud, Lechința, where white Fetească, Pinot gris, Traminer, Sauvignon or Neuburger are generous and velvety, semi-dry or dry wines, able to develop by aging a hard-wearing bouquet.
